Alright, let's talk stucco. If you own a home here in Hemet, you know our weather can be a real beast on the exterior of your house. Those scorching summers and wet winters aren't doing your stucco any favors. A lot of folks ask me, "When's the best time to fix this crack?" or "Can you do stucco work when it's raining?" Good questions, and the answers aren't always what you'd expect.

Timing Your Stucco Repairs: It's All About the Weather

Look, stucco isn't like painting an interior wall. You can't just slap it on whenever you feel like it. The weather plays a huge role in how well new stucco cures and bonds. Getting it wrong means you'll be calling me back sooner than you should have to.

Why Summer's a Mixed Bag

Our Hemet summers are brutal, right? We're talking 100+ degree days for weeks on end. While stucco needs warmth to cure properly, too much heat, especially direct sun, can be a problem. It can dry out too fast, leading to hairline cracks or a weaker finish. If we're doing a repair in the dead of summer, we're often working early mornings or late afternoons, and sometimes we'll even set up shade cloths to protect the fresh patch. It's doable, but it requires extra care and attention to detail to make sure it cures right.

Fall & Spring: The Sweet Spot

Honestly, if you can swing it, spring and fall are the absolute best times for stucco repair around here. You get those mild temperatures – 60s, 70s, maybe low 80s – and usually less extreme humidity. This allows the stucco to dry and cure slowly and evenly, which is exactly what you want for a strong, durable finish. The material has time to breathe, bond, and harden without being rushed by the sun or slowed down by the cold. If you've got a repair on your mind, that window from March to May or September to November is prime time.

Winter: When Rain and Cold Hit

Winter in Hemet isn't always cold, but we do get our share of rain. And rain and fresh stucco just don't mix. You can't apply stucco to a wet surface, and you can't have it exposed to rain before it's had a chance to cure. It'll wash out, weaken, and just make a mess. Plus, if temperatures drop too low, especially below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the stucco won't cure properly at all. It can freeze, leading to a weak, crumbly repair that won't last. So, if it's raining or freezing, we're not working on your stucco. We'll reschedule, because doing it right the first time saves everyone a headache.

Protecting Your Stucco Investment Year-Round

You've put money into your home's exterior, so let's keep it looking good. Here's what I tell my clients:

  • Keep an eye out for cracks: Don't wait for a small crack to become a big problem. Especially after a hot summer or a wet winter, walk around your house and look for any new hairline cracks or areas where the stucco might be bulging or flaking. Catching these early saves you money in the long run.
  • Water management is key: Make sure your sprinklers aren't constantly hitting your stucco. Over time, that constant moisture can lead to staining, mildew, and even deterioration of the stucco itself. Check your downspouts too – they should be directing water away from your foundation and walls, not dumping it right next to them. I've seen plenty of stucco damage in the older neighborhoods off Florida Avenue just from bad drainage.
  • Clean it gently: If your stucco gets dirty, a gentle wash with a garden hose and a soft brush is usually all it needs. For tougher spots, a mild detergent and water can work. Avoid high-pressure washers unless you really know what you're doing; they can damage the stucco surface if not used correctly.
  • Sealants matter: After a repair, or every few years, consider a good quality sealant. It adds an extra layer of protection against moisture intrusion, which is huge for extending the life of your stucco.
